Details of Pipeline Projects
TRANSMONTAIGNE
Project Location – Texas to Mexico
Summary Project Description – This project consisted of
laying a 10" pipeline to transport propylene from the Port
of Brownsville, Texas to a storage facility in Mexico. The
storage facility was also designed by Babcock Eagleton.
Babcock Eagleton provided all design, survey, right-of-way
acquisition, purchasing, project and construction management
for this pipeline.
VALERO HYDROCARBONS
Project Location – Texas to Mexico
Summary Project Description – This project consisted of
laying an 8" pipeline to transport propylene from an
existing storage facility near Laredo, Texas to a storage
and truck loading facility in Mexico. Babcock Eagleton also
designed the additional storage and pumping facility
additions to the existing facility as well as the grassroots
storage/truck loading facility in Mexico.
Babcock Eagleton provided all of the design, survey,
purchasing, and project management for this project.
Air Products & Chemicals
Project
Location – Bayport to Freeport, Texas
Summary Project Description – This project consisted of
62 miles of 10" pipeline with three meter stations and
twenty three valve sites. The system was designed and
constructed from the Bayport Industrial Complex to Freeport,
Texas. The pipeline was designed to move industrial
gases for the petrochemical market.
Babcock Eagleton provided all of the design, survey,
purchasing, permitting, right-of-way acquisition,
construction, and project management
for this project.
LAVACA PIPELINE CO.
Project Location – Houston, Texas
Summary Project Description – This project consisted of
constructing a 12" bi-directional pipeline for the purpose
of carrying ethane from Texas City to Mont Belvieu, Texas.
As with any pipeline in the Houston area, great care had to
be taken to design the pipeline in this highly congested and
populated area. A directional drill of the Houston Ship
Channel was also part of the project.
Babcock Eagleton provided all design, survey, right-of-way
acquisition, purchasing/receiving, permit acquisition,
project and construction management for this project.
PETRO SOURCE CARBON
COMPANY
Project
Location - Texas
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of
approximately 82 miles of 10-inch carbon dioxide
transmission pipeline which transports sour carbon dioxide
from four (4) existing compressor stations to a new 1,000
horsepower electric motor-driven pump station and custody
transfer meter for pumping and metering carbon dioxide into
the existing SACROC Carbon Dioxide Pipeline System.
Babcock Eagleton performed this project on a lump sum
turnkey basis. Services included pipeline route
reconnaissance and route determination, supervision of
rights-of-way acquisition, supervision of route survey, flow
studies and calculations to determine pipeline size and pump
requirements, obtaining all necessary permits, preparation
of all material and equipment specifications for line pipe,
valves, fittings, flanges, pump, motor, variable frequency
drive, and SCADA system; perform all detailed engineering
design and drafting for the pig launchers and receivers,
mainline valve assemblies, side valve assemblies, compressor
station tie-in assemblies, and pump stations, construction
and as-built surveying, and construction management for the
project.
All material required for this project was purchased by
Babcock Eagleton.
TEPPCO
Project
Location - Texas
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of
approximately 68 miles of three 12-inch pipelines to carry
ethylene, propylene and natural gasoline from Mont Belvieu
to Port Arthur, Texas. Pipeline design included 11 custody
transfer meter facilities, mainline block valve sites,
several lateral connections, launcher/receiver facilities
and commissioning plans.
Babcock Eagleton performed this project on a lump sum
turnkey basis. Services included pipeline route
reconnaissance and route determination, rights-of-way
acquisition, route survey, obtaining all necessary permits,
preparation of material and equipment specifications for
line pipe, valves, fittings, flanges, etc. and performed all
detailed engineering design and drafting for the pig
launchers and receivers, mainline valve assemblies and side
valve assemblies, and meter facilities and prepared the
contract documents, construction and as-built surveying, and
construction management for the project
CHEVRON PIPE LINE COMPANY
Project Location - Mont Belvieu/Deer Park, Texas
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of
approximately 16 miles of 10-inch ethylene pipeline, a meter
station, and various piping modifications to two existing
pipelines.
Babcock Eagleton performed preliminary field survey for
alignment sheets and permits, pipeline design, material and
equipment procurement services, construction staking,
construction alignment sheets, as-built survey, design of
metering and proving facilities, preparation of construction
bid packages, and evaluation of bids for construction and
equipment.
BIG THREE INDUSTRIES, INC. CARBON DIOXIDE
PIPELINE PROJECT
Project Location - West Texas,
Eastern New Mexico
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of
approximately 130 miles of 12, 10, and 8-inch pipeline which
delivers CO2
for tertiary oil recovery to various Permian Basin oil
fields. The system originates near Denver City, Texas and
terminates in Pecos County, Texas. The system includes
pigging facilities, mainline valves, measurement facilities
and flow control stations.
Babcock Eagleton's scope of work for the project included:
preliminary product cost estimates, pipeline route
reconnaissance and route determination; supervision of route
surveying; preparation of right-of-way acquisition
procedures and all necessary forms utilized in right-of-way
acquisition including property plats; detailed engineering
design and preparation of all construction drawings for the
pipeline and related appurtenances including mainline
valves, pigging facilities, measurement and flow control
stations; preparation of material specifications and bills
of material; preparation of construction contracts;
construction management and inspection; and commissioning
and start-up assistance.
CHEVRON, U.S.A. SACROC CARBON DIOXIDE
PIPELINE SYSTEM
(CANYON REEF CARRIERS, INC.)
Project Location - West Texas
Summary Project Description - Carbon dioxide is collected
from four plants at low pressure, compressed, and
transported at a rate of approximately one million pounds
per hour to a large oil field where injection occurs for
secondary and tertiary recovery of oil. The SACROC carbon
dioxide pipeline system consisted of 40 miles of 12-inch
pipeline, 180 miles of 16-inch pipeline, and six large
reciprocating compressor stations with a total of 84,500 HP.
Babcock Eagleton carried out the original feasibility
studies and in late 1970 began the design and construction
phases for the pipeline system. Activities performed by
Babcock Eagleton included: route selection and preparation
of alignment sheets; preparation of all construction
drawings, property plats, and permit drawings; supervision
of right-of-way acquisition and permits; specifications,
acquisition, and control of materials; preparation and
administration of construction contracts; construction
inspection; mill inspection of pipe and acceptance tests for
critical materials; and preparation of all drawings for
record and operations and maintenance manuals. From 1971
through 1977 Babcock Eagleton operated this pipeline system
under contract to the owner companies.
AMERADA HESS
CORPORATION - Tioga
Project Location - Williston Basin, ND
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of two
natural gas compressor stations and a transmission pipeline.
One station was a grass roots station with three 1,340 HP
gas turbine driven centrifugal compressors and waste heat
recovery boilers; the station was designed with a PLC based
control system for unattended operation. The existing
compressor station with two 800 HP integral gas engine
driven reciprocating compressors was completely modified for
pipeline service; modifications included new stations and
unit piping and valving, custody transfer meter, and
replacement of pneumatic engine/compressor controls with an
unattended PLC-based control system. The project also
included approximately 62 miles of 10-inch pipeline, five
miles of 8-inch pipeline, five miles of 6-inch pipeline, and
58 miles of fiber optic cable installed with the pipelines.
One 10-inch and two 8-inch pipelines and a fiber optic cable
were simultaneously installed across a 2.2 mile wide lake.
Babcock Eagleton performed all project management,
surveying, engineering design, material procurement, and
construction management for this project.
DIAMOND
SHAMROCK
Project Location -Bayport, Texas
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of a
complex 8-inch pipeline system in the Bayport area. The
pipeline system originates at an existing Diamond Shamrock
pipeline and continues to a delivery meter station at the
Texas City terminus. The project consisted of 19 miles of
8-inch pipeline with 5 mainline block valves and a metering
facility. The line had several directional drills including
a complex 2400 foot drill across Clear Creek at the entrance
to Clear Lake.
Babcock Eagleton provided route selection, surveying,
mapping, permit application, right-of-way acquisition,
pipeline and meter station design, material specifications,
construction inspection, as-built survey, drafting,
construction supervision and project start-up and associated
documentation on a lump sum turnkey basis.
UNOCAL PIPELINE COMPANY
Project
Location - Nederland, TX
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of a
two mile, 24-inch crude pipeline, pump station, custody
transfer metering station, manifolds, and control system to
handle 20,000 BPD tanker unloading. The pipeline ties into
the DOE's existing Strategic Petroleum Reserve's (SPR)
pipeline.
Babcock Eagleton performed engineering design, drafting,
survey, construction management and inspection for the
project.
CHAMPLIN PETROLEUM
COMPANY
Project
Location - Texas
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of the
installation of multiple pipelines for the transport of
various hydrocarbon feedstocks and products between an
existing refinery and an expansion project refinery
approximately 4.4 miles away. A total of 52.1 miles of
pipe, 4, 6, 8 and 10-inch diameter, was installed in a
common trench along the 4.4 mile route. Two valve stations
and a nitrogen metering station were also designed and
installed.
Babcock Eagleton provided all design, purchasing, project
and construction management for this unique pipeline project
in an industrial/commercial/residential area in Corpus
Christi, Texas.
BRAVO CARBON DIOXIDE PIPELINE
Project
Location - West Texas, Eastern New Mexico
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of
approximately 210 miles of 20-inch high-pressure pipeline
which transports carbon dioxide from the Bravo Dome
formation in Northeast New Mexico to the Permian Basin oil
fields in West Texas for the purpose of tertiary recovery of
oil.
Babcock Eagleton's scope of work for the project included:
pipeline route reconnaissance and route determination;
supervision of land ownership searches; supervision of route
surveying; preparation of right-of-way acquisition
procedures and all necessary forms utilized in right-of-way
acquisition including property plats; detailed engineering
design and preparation of all construction drawings for the
pipeline and related appurtenances including mainline
valves, pigging facilities, a 1,600-HP booster station and
measurement and flow control stations; preparation of
material specifications and bills of material; preparation
of studies and cost estimates as required to determine
pipeline sizes and construction budgets; and preparation of
studies to determine the type of communication system best
suited for the project.
Babcock Eagleton planned and supervised a laboratory test
program utilizing the services of a major pump manufacturer
to determine whether carbon dioxide could be pumped with
pipeline pumps as opposed to being compressed for the
purpose of boosting pipeline pressures. A test loop was
designed and carbon dioxide ranging from 100 mol percent
purity to mixtures containing up to 20 mol percent
noncondensible gas components were tested. Tests were
conducted at pressures and temperatures above and below
critical.
ITR
PETROLEUM, INC. - GENERAL ATLANTIC ENERGY
Project
Location - Wyoming
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of a 40
mile, 16-inch diameter gas mainline and 12 miles of 4, 6, 8
and 12-inch gathering pipelines connecting 28 well sites in
Southeast Wyoming.
Babcock Eagleton performed the project on a lump sum turnkey
basis. The work included project management, route
selection, right-of-way acquisition, permitting, engineering
design, drafting, material purchasing and field receipt,
construction management and system start-up.
HIMONT USA, INC.
Project
Location - Mont Belvieu, TX
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of a
complex 28 mile, 8-inch diameter propylene system. Pipeline
design included 3 meter stations, 6 remote operated valve
sites, and a controlling SCADA system. System originated at
a marine terminal facility and connected the Himont Bayport
Plant to underground propylene storage in Mont Belvieu with
meter facilities at each of the three sites.
Babcock Eagleton performed project management, engineering
design, drafting, pipeline and plant surveys, aerial
photography, material purchasing, construction activities,
construction supervision and project start-up and associated
documentation on a lump sum turnkey basis.
TRANSPETCO BRAVO DOME TO POSTLE FIELD CO2
PIPELINE

Location - Eastern New Mexico, Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma
Panhandle
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of
approximately 120 miles of 12-inch carbon dioxide
transmission pipeline which transports carbon dioxide from
Amoco Production Company's Bravo Dome Compressor Station to
the Mobil Exploration and Producing Postle Field Unit near
Guymon, Oklahoma.
Babcock Eagleton performed all calculations and flow studies
necessary to determine the pipeline size with consideration
given to the addition of future booster pumps. Babcock
Eagleton prepared all material specifications for line pipe,
valves, fittings, and flanges and performed all detailed
engineering design and drafting for the pig launchers and
receivers, mainline valve assemblies, future booster pump
station valving, measurement facilities and related controls
at each end of the pipeline. Babcock Eagleton designed a
satellite based SCADA system for remote control and
monitoring of the pipeline. Babcock Eagleton performed all
route surveying, obtained all necessary permits and acquired
the rights-of-way. All material required for this project
was purchased by Babcock Eagleton.
This pipeline system was designed and installed by Babcock
Eagleton on a lump sum turnkey basis.
BASF
Project
Location - Texas
Summary Project Description - This project consisted of a 55
mile, 8-inch diameter propylene system. Pipeline design
included metering facilities, 10 mainline block valve sites,
manifolding for intermediate tie-ins, launcher/receiver
facilities and a controlling SCADA system.
Babcock Eagleton provided route selection, surveying,
mapping, permit application, right-of-way acquisition,
pipeline and meter station design, SCADA system design,
material specifications, contract specification documents,
field engineering, construction inspection, as-built survey,
drafting, construction supervision and project start-up and
